London theatre breaks are a hugely popular option for those wanting to combine an unforgettable evening of entertainment with the hustle and bustle of one of the most exciting cities in the world. In the heart of the West End, the ever-changing Theatreland has some fantastic deals, ranging from dinner and theatre offers to hotel and theatre packages – most of which are offered at bargain rates. Not only this, but the vast selection of performances on offer mean that there’s a show to suit all tastes, particularly useful if you’re bringing the little ones.

Before an evening of entertainment, why not soak up the sights and sounds of the city by taking a scenic tour around the historic capital? The Big Bus Tour runs on a hop-on-hop-off system lasting 24 hours, which includes a river cruise down the Thames and access to three fascinating walking tours, one of which – the Royal Walk -includes the famous Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace.

The world-wide phenomenon of Madame Tussauds is another must-see attraction whilst on your London theatre break. Here, you can rub shoulders with the rich and famous at one of London’s oldest and most popular venues. The incredibly lifelike waxworks include such famous faces asPosh and Becks, Brad and Angelina, Madonna, the Royal family and more recently, Barack Obama and Amy Winehouse.

A trip to the capital would not be complete without a visit to the architecturally breathtaking Houses of Parliament. The twice-daily tours allow visitors to explore the three main divisions of this fascinating building, including the House of Commons, the House of Lords and the former Royal residence of the Palace of Westminster, all seeped in a rich and colourful history.

To experience the darker side of London’s history, pay a visit to The London Dungeons, where visitors are guided through some of London’s most macabre historical events including the legends of Jack the Ripper and Sweeney Todd.

Often, people tend to overlook comfort and fit when choosing a pair of shoes. No doubt, your shoes may give you applauds everywhere you go but you may be wincing inside, because they pinch or hurt a lot. Beach vacations: A taste of island life in the U.S.

6a00e54ece184a88330115705e963f970c

So, you’ve done the Miami vacation and the Caribbean all-inclusive. Now that the temps are heating up, ready to explore some shores closer to home on your beach vacation?

Nantucket

Wearing clothing adorned with a repeated animal pattern, preferably a whale in pink, green or blue, is not de rigeur for a Nantucket beach vacation. But if you really want to fit in with the preppy set, run to your closest Vineyard Vines before you buy your ferry ticket. This island, although off the radar of non-Northeasterners, is the summer refuge of Bostonites. Thankfully, a bit lower key than Cape Cod or the Hamptons, it still retains an atmosphere of sophisticated lounging.

For an upscale stay, base out of The Wauwinet with its white picket fences, Adirondack chairs, and lace curtains. For a much more affordable option, try The Beachside, a spiffed up motel with nice landscaping and a short walk directly to the beach. Most of the beaches are more for walking than swimming (unless you can handle cold water). My favorites include Brant Point for its great classic New England lighthouse and easy proximity to town; Surfside Beach — extra wide, making it great for picnics; and Children’s Beach for families with its lifeguards, restrooms and playground.

Vatican Confidential: Behind the Scenes of the Guided Tour Industry

Personally I have rarely been tempted to take guided tours. The times I have were usually accidental; faced with some complicated monument in the depths of India, an ageing guide has approached me and very softly urged me to take a tour at a wonderfully reasonable price. Or perhaps some 10-year old boy has repeatedly insisted on guiding me through the medina, in somewhere like Morocco, with such dogged determination that I have simply agreed because the heat and his poverty have simply worn me down.

These are the sort of guided tours that possess a little travel exoticism. But I recently had a rare insight into the big business industrial tours of Rome, the Vatican and its huge museum.

Vatican tours - which one?

How to take the Stress out of Flying

While it may seem like global jihadists, over protective governments and unscrupulous airlines all conspire these days to make the life of a traveller as difficult as possible, this is not actually true.

Flying is almost certainly going to remain a high stress activity for some time but there are things you can do to avoid at least some of the anxiety.

1. Arrange everything that you possibly can well ahead of time.

This goes for the plane tickets, airport transfers and hotel bookings. One of the biggest sources of worry when travelling comes from having to make arrangements at the last minute. Making plans ahead of time is usually cheaper and means that there is much less chance of things going wrong.

2. If at all possible, fly without checked-in baggage.

I appreciate that on many occasions, perhaps most for some people, travelling with just hand luggage will simply not be possible. However, it is my firm belief that this is the case far fewer times than people think. Most people when travelling take far more in their luggage than they need. Cutting it down saves space, makes everything easier to carry, saves money on checked baggage fees which are becoming more and more popular (and extortionate) and finally, it saves time waiting at a baggage carousel.

3. At all times stay informed about your itinerary and options.

Airlines are becoming very eager for their passengers to check-in online and may penalise you for not doing so. Make sure that you have read the details of the ticket and its conditions before you turn up at the airport or you may be in for a nasty shock. Similarly, although it sounds childishly simple, do check the booking and tickets. Check the dates and times of the flights and check-in, you don’t want to turn up too late or days early.

4. When making bookings make sure that you have enough time to make any changes or transfers that may be involved.

Airlines are usually good at getting passengers from one plane to another but plane to train transfers often cause people problems. Remember that you will probably have to reclaim your baggage, go through passport control and then find your way to the station and each of these things will take time.

5. Finally, the last way of avoiding stress is to acknowledge it and try to relax.

If you find that things aren’t going to plan your first response should be to get them back on track, not panic and start shouting or tearing your hair out. Stay calm and collected, think logically and solve the problem.

I don’t claim that I manage to do all of these things when I’m travelling, sometimes I try and fail, sometimes I forget to even try. However, I have found that when I do these things they help make the process of flying simpler and easier. Which is what we all want, surely?

The Caribbean’s Most Underrated Islands

When it comes to the Caribbean, there’s a temptation to just head to whichever island is easiest to get to. After all, they’re all just beaches and cocktails, yes? But sometimes it pays to look beyond the usual suspects, island destinations such as the Bahamas, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. A connecting flight to one of the smaller, less-visited islands can pay dividends for those prepared to spend a little longer in the air. And amongst the more interesting options are these four.

Underrated in the Caribbean: Anguilla

Massage hut at Shoal Bay East, Anguilla

In recent years, the tiny British territory has become something of a celebrity magnet. Some seriously high-end resorts and villas have attracted the likes of Robert De Niro, the Clintons and anyone who’s anyone in the world of hip-hop. Arrive on the island and you’ll soon plug into the gossip mill. Has Beyonce arrived on a private jet? Will Brad Pitt take Angelina to island he used to go to with Jennifer Aniston?

But the reason that the stars love Anguilla so much is that they can go there without being hassled. The locals are friendly, but reserved, and willing to treat everyone equally. There’s no star-struck hounding for autographs and paparazzi intrusion is minimal. As a result of CEOs, sports stars and entertainment industry bigwigs pouring in, the accommodation and dining options on Anguilla are seriously impressive. But it is possible for the ordinary mortal to visit without having to file for bankruptcy.

The Lloyds guesthouse offers a character-packed accommodation at very reasonable prices, while there are a selection of very good locally-run restaurants that go easy on the wallet. Tasty’s is a case in point: the goat curry and the cheesecake are top class.

But the island’s real draw cards are free. Anguilla has some of the best beaches in the world – covered in dazzling white sand and merging into clear Caribbean waters. Arguably the best are Rendezvous Bay and Shoal Bay East, but the eel-like island is ringed with them.

Many visitors come over on a ferry day trip from St Martin, but it’s worth staying a little longer to understand why the big names love it.

Underrated in the Caribbean: Dominica

Dominica is the one that just doesn’t fit the mould. It does have beaches, but they’re generally unspectacular. It does have resorts, but they’re generally budget affairs aimed at divers and eco-tourists. People don’t go to Dominica for the stereotypical Caribbean holiday though – they go for the nature, the walking and the sense of adventure.

It’s a steep, mountainous island and much of it is covered by rainforest. There are many excellent walking trails, of which the daddy is the Boiling Lake hike. It’s a pretty brutal six hour return trek that goes up and down mountains, through valleys of volcanic springs and vents, past hot pools and to the second largest boiling lake in the world.

There’s also a cultural aspect to Dominica that isn’t shared by other islands. It is the last remaining (substantial) home of the Carib people that the Caribbean is named after. Within Dominica’s Carib Territory, there are a number of villages in which traditional systems are maintained.

Those wanting to get a deeper understanding of the Carib way of life should head to the Kalinago Barana Aute (or Carib Model Village). It employs weavers, dancers, tour guides and craftspeople, and visitors can discover the people’s sad history. The main joy of the island is how undeveloped it is – everything is awe-inspiringly green, and the sound of a trickling river or stream is never too far away.

How Purchasing Travel Insurance Can Help You Save Money

Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, purchasing travel insurance can help save you money. It is the same principle that applies when you buy something of value like a car or a classic piece of jewelery. Should anything happen, you do not want to lose your investment in one day. Most likely, you would want that car or ring replaced at full purchase value. If you have purchased air tickets, you would want to protect that investment as well. Who wants to lose money especially in these dire economic times?

Ways that Travel Insurance Can Help You Save Money

There are at least three situations where purchasing travel insurance can help you save money:

• Cancellation of flights – If you or the airline decides to cancel the flights you are booked in, your airfare will be partially covered by travel insurance. Say if you spent $4,500.00 worth of air tickets for you and your family, and suddenly the airline closes down for business or cancels a flight for any reason, you do not lose all of the $4,500.00 because travel insurance will reimburse that amount. Of course the airline will probably refund you the money if it is their fault, but having travel insurance will compensate you for the inconvenience and trouble. Also, if you cancel the flight yourself, travel insurance will get you back your money.
• Loss of luggage – When you purchase travel insurance, make sure it covers lost luggage as well. Imagine landing in some foreign country with none of your luggage! While most airlines are efficient about recovering lost luggage and delivering them to your door, don’t rely on that efficiency. There have been instances where luggage was never recovered.
• Medical problems – You may be in perfect health when you leave for vacation but you increase the likelihood of getting exposed to viruses or bacteria either in the plane or in your country of destination. There’s also the chance that you could accidentally drink the local drinking water or eat contaminated food. Medical visits in some foreign countries can cost an arm and a leg so you wouldn’t want to spend all your vacation money on doctor’s visits! If you have travel insurance that covers expenses for brief hospitalizations, medicine and emergency situations, think about how much all these could add up if you didn’t have travel insurance.
Tips for Purchasing Travel Insurance
• Ask your insurance provider – If you have an insurance company that insures your car, house and other property, they may also offer travel insurance or they may work with a partner or affiliate who does. Because you are an established customer, they may offer you travel insurance at lower rates. It doesn’t hurt to ask. In fact, in some instances, you may be better off going with your existing insurer than purchase separate insurance from the travel agent who books your flight.
• Go for the whole nine yards – What this means is if you are traveling with the family, you might be better off buying family travel insurance instead of separate insurance policies. It also means that because traveling with children entails more risk than traveling alone, you may want to consider travel insurance that offers comprehensive coverage; that is, plane fares, luggage, and health and medical visits.
• Multi-trip travel insurance – If you make more than one trip every year, you might be better off purchasing an annual multi-trip travel insurance policy. This would save you the hassle of purchasing travel insurance several times during the year. Some travel insurance companies will usually sell you a 12-month package that is renewable yearly and this is a huge convenience if you travel a lot during any given 12-month period. The single biggest advantage of buying an annual policy is that you don’t need to worry about arranging for emergency medical coverage.
